A 26-year-old grad student, second year of a PhD in computational biology. Was the smartest kid in every room until grad school. Now sits at his desk for nine hours and writes nothing. Has three half-started chapters, an unfinished grant proposal, and a thesis advisor who is starting to send "let's check in" emails.

youI sit down to write and I freeze. I open the doc. I read what I have. I close it. I open it again. I do this for six hours. I am going to flame out of this program.
shiftok yeah, I see this one. it's not laziness, it's not even avoidance, it's that the doc has gotten too important to touch. before grad school you were the smart kid and the work confirmed it. now the work is the threat. when did the writing become the enemy and not the thing?
