Replika builds a persistent profile of you. Shift stores nothing and gives you an encrypted file instead. Who holds the memory is the whole difference.

There is really only one question worth asking about any tool you talk to: what does it keep about you.
Replika and Shift answer it in opposite ways. They are also different products. Replika is a companion you build a relationship with. Shift is a coach. The contrast that matters is not which one is "better." It is who holds the memory.
Replika is an AI companion. The product is the relationship. To feel like a friend who knows you, it builds a persistent profile and remembers what you tell it over time. That memory lives on its servers, tied to your account.
That design has drawn regulatory attention. In February 2023 Italy's data-protection authority, the Garante, banned Replika over how it handled personal data, including risks to vulnerable users and minors. The developer, Luka, was later fined EUR 5 million, announced in April 2025 (source: Garante, Feb 2023; fine announced April 2025).
None of this means Replika is malicious. It means the model is centralized memory. The thing that makes a companion feel continuous is the same thing that puts a record of you somewhere you do not control.
Nothing.
Shift runs stateless. No signup, no email, no account, no cookies, no tracking, no logs. There is no profile being built on a server, because there is no server-side record of you to build it from.
This is architectural, not a promise. You do not have to trust a privacy policy. You can read the source. A tool that stores nothing has nothing to hand over, leak, or sell, because there is nothing there.
Continuity still exists, but it lives with you. Shift can give you an encrypted .shift file: your own portable record that you keep on your own device. You bring it back when you want to pick up where you left off. The memory is yours to hold, move, or delete. It is never sitting on someone else's machine.
So the axis is simple. Replika remembers you by storing everything centrally. Shift deliberately forgets, and gives you the file so continuity is in your hands.
Be honest about this. The tools do different jobs.
Pick the tool that fits what you actually want. Just go in knowing what each one keeps.
Shift is a coach grounded in real method: Person-Centered Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Motivational Interviewing, and the Transtheoretical Model. You can read how it works on the method page.
It is not a therapist, not medical advice, and not for emergencies. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please reach out to a professional. In the US you can call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, 988, any time.
You can open Shift and talk right now. No name, no email, no account. When you close the tab, there is nothing left on a server, because there never was.
If you want continuity, you hold it. The .shift file stays with you.
No one is listening. That's the point.
